FREN 1311 Beginning French (3)
This is a common course number. Prerequisite: None. This course is an introduction to French speaking, oral comprehension, reading, writing, grammar and culture. It is strongly recommended that students who plan to study French for more than one semester enroll in French 1411, which includes an extra hour of lab per week (and an extra hour of credit for the course). Students who successfully complete French 1311 and wish to continue their studies of French may register for French 1412. (3 Lec., 1 Lab.)

FREN 1411 Beginning French I (4)
This is a common course number. Former course prefix/number FR 101. Prerequisite: None. This course is an introductory course intended for students with little or no knowledge of the language. Its aim is to present essential vocabulary and grammar, and to develop the pronunciation, listening, reading, and writing skills necessary for basic communication and comprehension. Customs and cultural insights are also presented. (3 Lec., 2 Lab.)

FREN 1412 Beginning French II (4)
This is a common course number. Former course prefix/number FR 102. Prerequisite: French 1411 or the equivalent or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor. This course continues the oral practice, reading, writing, grammar and cultural studies begun in French 1411. Students are expected to acquire a substantial amount of vocabulary and begin to deal with idiomatic language and more advanced syntax. (3 Lec., 2 Lab.)

FREN 2306 French Conversation (3)
This is a common course number. Former course prefix/number FR 207. Prerequisite: French 1412 or the equivalent. This course is designed to strengthen and improve oral skills in the language. Oral activities focus on current events, cultural, historical and social issues. Audio-visual media are used to explore French life and society. This course is intended to complement French 2311. This course may be repeated for credit. Topics vary from semester to semester. (3 Lec.)

This course is designed to further develop students’ overall language proficiency and cultural knowledge through more advanced reading, listening, speaking and writing exercises.
