MILS 1141   Foundations of Officership (1) New course added May 27, 2003
Former course prefix/number MIL 100/MILS 1241.
Prerequisite: None.
The purpose of this course is to introduce cadets to issues and competencies that are central to a commissioned officer’s responsibilities. These initial lessons establish a framework for understanding officership, leadership, and the Army values. Additionally, the semester addressees “life skills” including fitness and time management. The course is designed to support recruiting and retention of cadets by giving them accurate insight into the Army Profession and the officer’s role within the Army. Requires concurrent enrollment in MILS 1180 leadership lab and participation in weekly physical fitness training, plus optional participation in a weekend field training exercise. (1 Lec.)

MILS 1142   Basic Leadership (1) New course added May 27, 2003

Prerequisite: None.
Application of principles of leadership through participation in physically and mentally challenging exercises with upper division ROTC students. Course focuses on communication skills, organizational ethics, study and time management techniques. Concurrent enrollment in MILS 1180 leadership lab and mandatory participation in individual physical fitness training, plus optional participation in a weekend field training exercise. (1 Lec.)

MILS 1180   Leadership Laboratory (1)
Former course prefix/number MIL 102.
Prerequisite: None.
A practical laboratory of applied leadership and skills. Student-planned, -organized and -conducted training, oriented toward leadership development. Laboratory topics include marksmanship, small unit tactics, multi-tiered programs focused on individual skill levels. Uniform and equipment provided, no fee. May be repeated for credit. (3 Lab.)

MILS 2251   Individual Leadership Studies (2) New course added May 27, 2003

Prerequisite: None.
Students identify successful leadership characteristics through observation of others and self through discovery learning. Students participate in numerous exercises to develop problem solving and critical thinking skills and apply communication, feedback, and conflict resolution skills. Students record observed leadership traits in a dimensional leadership journal and discuss observations in a small group environment. Requires concurrent enrollment in MILS 1180 leadership lab and participation in weekly physical fitness training, plus optional participation in a weekend field training exercise. (2 Lec.)

MILS 2252   Leadership and Teamwork (2) New course added May 27, 2003
Former course prefix/number MIL 205/MILS 2352.
Prerequisite: None.
Coursework builds on MILS 2251 learning objectives and focuses on team building, influencing, communicating, decision-making, creative problem solving, planning and organizational skills through direct learning experiences. Experiential learning activities are designed to challenge the cadet’s current beliefs, knowledge and skills. Course work also introduces the student to individual and team aspects of military tactics in small unit operations. Requires concurrent enrollment in MILS 1180 leadership lab and participation in weekly physical fitness training, plus optional participation in a weekend field training exercise. (2 Lec.)

MILS 2291   Conference Course (2)
Former course prefix/number MIL 203.
Prerequisite: Permission of the PMS.
Independent study. Designed to supplement the military science curricula by a student's concentrated study in a narrower field of military skill or subject matter. May be repeated for credit. Does not count for PE credit. (2 Lec.)
