KORE 1311 Introduction to Korean (3) New course added May 21, 2004
This is a Texas Common Course Number.
Prerequisite: None.
KORE 1311 is an introduction to the regular Korean course sequence; it is not a substitute for KORE 1411. The focus is on pronunciation and the communications skills using basic vocabulary and grammar. Customs and cultural insights are also presented. Students who wish to continue their studies will next enroll in KORE 1411. This course is cross-listed as Korean 1411. The student may register for either Korean 1311 or Korean 1411, but may receive credit for only one of the two. (3 Lec., 1 Lab.)

KORE 1411 Beginning Korean I (4)
This is a Texas Common Course Number.
Prerequisite: None.
This course is an introductory course intended for students with little or no knowledge of the language. Its aim is to present essential vocabulary and grammar, and to develop the pronunciation, listening, reading, and writing skills necessary for basic communication and comprehension. By the end of the semester, students are expected to master Hangul, the Korean writing system. Customs and cultural insights are presented. This course is cross-listed as Korean 1311. The student may register for either Korean 1411 or Korean 1311, but may receive credit for only one of the two. (3 Lec., 2 Lab.)

KORE 1412 Beginning Korean II (4)
This is a Texas Common Course Number.
Prerequisite: Korean 1411 or the equivalent or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor.
This course continues the oral practice, reading, writing, grammar and cultural studies begun in Korean 1411. Students are expected to acquire substantial amount of vocabulary and begin to deal with idiomatic language and more advanced syntax. (3 Lec., 2 Lab.)

KORE 2311 Intermediate Korean I (3)
This is a Texas Common Course Number.
Prerequisite: Korean 1412 or the equivalent or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor.
This course is designed to further develop students’ overall language proficiency and cultural knowledge through advanced reading, listening, speaking and writing exercises. Grammatical concepts are reviewed and expanded. (3 Lec.)

KORE 2312 Intermediate Korean II (3)
This is a Texas Common Course Number.
Prerequisite: Korean 2311 or the equivalent or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor.
This course is a continuation of Korean 2311. The stress is on reading, composition, grammatical complexities, and intense oral practice, with continued studies of the culture. This course also concentrates on the introduction of approximately 120 Chinese characters related to Korean vocabulary words. (3 Lec.)
