CHIN 1311 Beginning Chinese (3)
This is a Texas Common Course Number. Prerequisite: None. CHIN 1311 is an introduction to the regular Chinese course sequence; it is not a substitute for CHIN 1411. The focus is on pronunciation and the communications skills using basic vocabulary and grammar. Customs and cultural insights are also presented. Students who wish to continue their studies will next enroll in CHIN 1411. This course is cross-listed as Chinese 1411. The student may register for either Chinese 1311 or Chinese 1411, but may receive credit for only one of the two. (3 Lec., 1 Lab.)

CHIN 1411 Beginning Chinese I (4)
This is a Texas Common Course Number. Prerequisite: None. This course is an introductory course intended for students with little or no knowledge of the language. Its aim is to present essential vocabulary and grammar, and to develop the pronunciation, listening, reading, and writing skills necessary for basic communication and comprehension. Customs and cultural insights are also presented. This course is cross-listed as Chinese 1311. The student may register for either Chinese 1411 or Chinese 1311, but may receive credit for only one of the two. (3 Lec., 2 Lab.)

CHIN 1412 Beginning Chinese II (4)
This is a Texas Common Course Number. Prerequisite: Chinese 1411 or the equivalent or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor. This course continues the oral practice, reading, writing, grammar and cultural studies begun in Chinese 1411. Students are expected to acquire a substantial amount of vocabulary and begin to deal with idiomatic expressions and more advanced syntax. (3 Lec., 2 Lab.)

CHIN 2311 Intermediate Chinese I (3)
This is a Texas Common Course Number. Prerequisite: Chinese 1412 or the equivalent or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor. This course is designed to further develop students’ overall language proficiency and cultural knowledge through more advanced reading, listening, speaking and writing exercises. Grammatical concepts are reviewed and expanded. (3 Lec.)

CHIN 2312 Intermediate Chinese II (3)
This is a Texas Common Course Number. Prerequisite: Chinese 2311 or the equivalent or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor. This course is a continuation of Chinese 2311. The stress is on reading, composition, grammatical complexities, and intense oral practice, with continued studies of the culture. (3 Lec.)
