FREN 1311 Introduction to French (3)
This is a Texas Common Course Number. Prerequisite: None. FREN 1311 is an introduction to the regular French course sequence; it is not a substitute for FREN 1411. The focus is on pronunciation and the communications skills using basic vocabulary and grammar. Customs and cultural insights are also presented. Students who wish to continue their studies will next enroll in FREN 1411. This course is cross-listed as French 1411. The student may register for either French 1311 or French 1411, but may receive credit for only one of the two. (3 Lec., 1 Lab.)

FREN 1411 Beginning French I (4)
This is a Texas Common Course Number. Prerequisite: None. This course is an introductory course intended for students with little or no knowledge of the language. Its aim is to present essential vocabulary and grammar, and to develop the pronunciation, listening, reading, and writing skills necessary for basic communication and comprehension. Customs and cultural insights are also presented. This course is cross-listed as French 1311. The student may register for either French 1411 or French 1311, but may receive credit for only one of the two. (3 Lec., 2 Lab.)

FREN 1412 Beginning French II (4)
This is a Texas Common Course Number. Prerequisite: French 1411 or the equivalent or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor. This course continues the oral practice, reading, writing, grammar and cultural studies begun in French 1411. Students are expected to acquire a substantial amount of vocabulary and begin to deal with idiomatic language and more advanced syntax. (3 Lec., 2 Lab.)

FREN 2306 French Conversation (3)
This is a Texas Common Course Number. Prerequisite: French 1412 or the equivalent. This course is designed to strengthen and improve oral skills in the language. Oral activities focus on current events, cultural, historical and social issues. Audio-visual media are used to explore French life and society. This course is intended to complement French 2311. This course may be repeated for credit. Topics vary from semester to semester. (3 Lec.)

FREN 2311 Intermediate French I (3)
This is a Texas Common Course Number. Prerequisite: French 1412 or the equivalent or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor. This course is designed to further develop students’ overall language proficiency and cultural knowledge through more advanced reading, listening, speaking and writing exercises. Grammatical concepts are reviewed and expanded. (3 Lec.)
