JAPN 1311   Introduction to Japanese () (3)
This is a Texas Common Course Number.
Prerequisite: None.
JAPN 1311 is an introduction to the regular Japanese course sequence; it is not a substitute for JAPN 1411. The focus is on pronunciation and the communications skills using basic vocabulary and grammar. Customs and cultural insights are also presented. Students who wish to continue their studies will next enroll in JAPN 1411. This course is cross-listed as Japanese 1411. The student may register for either Japanese 1311 or Japanese 1411, but may receive credit for only one of the two. (3 Lec., 1 Lab.)

JAPN 1411   Beginning Japanese I (4)
This is a Texas Common Course Number.
Prerequisite: None.
This course is an introductory course intended for students with little or no knowledge of the language. Its aim is to present essential vocabulary and grammar, and to develop the pronunciation, listening, reading, and writing skills necessary for basic communication and comprehension. Japanese customs, culture, and institutions are also presented. This course is cross-listed as Japanese 1311. The student may register for either Japanese 1411 or Japanese 1311, but may receive credit for only one of the two. (3 Lec., 2 Lab.)

JAPN 1412   Beginning Japanese II (4)
This is a Texas Common Course Number.
Prerequisite: Japanese 1411 or the equivalent or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor.
This course continues the conversation, reading, writing, and grammar begun in Japanese 1411. Students are expected to acquire a substantial amount of vocabulary, and will continue study of Japanese culture, customs, and institutions. (3 Lec., 2 Lab.)
