This is a WECM Course Number. Prerequisite: Basic understanding of personal computers and operating systems as obtained in ITSC 1401 or BCIS 1405 or COSC 1401 or equivalent experience approved by instructor. A study of the UNIX operating system including multi-user concepts, terminal emulation, use of system editor, basic UNIX commands, and writing script files. Topics include introductory systems management concepts. This course is cross-listed as ITSC 1407. This course provides students with the knowledge to read, write, and debug C shell scripts. Students are taught how to develop simple scripts to automate frequently executed sequences of commands, and how to use conditional logic, user interaction, loops, and menus to enhance the productivity and effectiveness of the user. This course is intended for programmers who are familiar with the Solaris operating environment and who would like to read and understand various C shell scripts and write their own shell scripts to automate their day-to-day tasks. Students will perform basic system administration tasks, such as installing a standalone system , adding users, backing up and restoring file systems, and adding new printer support. ITSC 1401 will not meet the computer literacy requirement in the core curriculum and/or Associate in Arts or Associate in Sciences degrees. COSC 1300 will meet this requirement. ITSC 1401 meets the computer literacy requirement in most technical certificates and degrees. COSC 1300 will not substitute for ITSC 1401 and ITSC 1401 cannot be substituted for COSC 1300.

ITSC 1421 Intermediate PC Operating Systems (4)
This is a WECM Course Number. Prerequisite: Basic understanding of personal computers and operating systems as obtained in ITSC 1401 or BCIS 1405 or COSC 1401 or equivalent experience approved by instructor. The course may provide students with the knowledge to read, write, develop and debug simple shell scripts in one or more shells including the ability to use conditional logic, user interaction and loops. It is intended for programmers who have had UNIX I who would like to read and understand various shell scripts which automate frequently executed sequences of commands, and write their own shell scripts to automate day-to-day tasks. Alternatively, topics in PC operating systems including continued study in advanced installation and configuration troubleshooting, advanced file management, memory and storage management may be covered, as well as updating of peripheral device drivers, and use of utilities to increase system performance.
