"Open source" is a term that refers to a broad category of licensing agreements which permits others to use the software as they see fit without the onerous restrictions that are part of most proprietary ("closed source") licensing agreements. Open source is rapidly emerging in all levels of industry. Companies such as Oracle, Novell, Apple, Hewlett-Packard, and IBM have made significant investments in open source technology.
