RADIOLOGIC SCIENCES
Brookhaven and El Centro only
(Associate in Applied Sciences Degree, Tech Prep)
Degree Plan Code: AAS.RADIOLOG.SCI.05
This program prepares the student to become a professional radiologic technologist with a specialty in radiography. The radiographer uses radiation to produce internal images of the patient which are used by the physician to make a diagnosis. For the vast majority of diagnostic procedures, the radiographer has total responsibility for the care and well-being of the patient and must be prepared to produce quality images with care and empathy.
The graduate radiographer is eligible to sit for the examination given by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and eligible to be a Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist licensed by the Texas Department of Health. Radiographers work in hospitals, physician's offices, and primary care facilities.
Students wishing to be admitted to the El Centro Radiography program must comply with the following criteria outlined in this paragraph. Admission requirements include an information session, satisfactory scores on pre-entrance assessment testing, completion of four prerequisite courses with a minimum of 2.5 grade point average and completion of all requirements for admission as a full-time student to the College. Applicants are rank-ordered for admission based on grade point average earned for the prerequisite courses. Applicants should contact the Assessment Center at El Centro College to sign up for the assessment tests and Health Occupations Admissions to obtain an information packet.
Students wishing to be admitted to the Brookhaven Radiography program must comply with the following criteria outlined in this paragraph. The student must be admitted to a DCCCD college, have completed the four prerequisite courses with a 3.0 grade point average or higher and a "B" or higher in SCIT 1407 or BIOL 2401, attend an information session for the program and complete an application packet within the designated filing period. Applicants will be required to submit a comprehensive application packet to the BHC Radiologic Science office that will be used during the selection process. The selection process contains several criteria that are outlined on the BHC Radiology website http://www.brookhavencollege.edu/instrudiv/emshealth/radtech.html. Application packets will be available at the information sessions.
Although the admission requirements vary from El Centro to Brookhaven, the program of courses are the same with the exception of six courses. Those attending El Centro will enroll in courses specified as HPRS (Health Professions and Related Sciences):
Semester I
HPRS 2231 General Health Professions Management
HPRS 1204 Basic Health Profession Skills
Semester II HPRS 1291 Special Topics in Health Professions and Related Sciences
Semester III HPRS 1202 Wellness and Health Promotion
Semester IV
HPRS 2201 Pathophysiology
Semester V HPRS 2300 Pharmacology for Health Professions
Those attending Brookhaven College will enroll in the following alternative RADR courses:
Semester I
RADR 1203 Patient Care
RADR 1201 Introduction to Radiography
Semester II RADR 1291 Special Topics in Medical Radiology Technology/Technician
Semester III RADR 1266 Practicum--Radiologic Technology/Science-Radiographer
Semester IV RADR 2240 Sectional Anatomy for Medical Imaging
Semester V RADR 2233 Advanced Medical Imaging
Completion of the program and successful completion of the ARRT examination provides the graduate with credentials to continue their education in other radiologic specialty disciplines. The El Centro program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT, 20 N. Wacker Drive, Suite 900, Chicago, Illinois 60606-2901: Telephone number 312-704-5300). The Brookhaven program is in the process of obtaining accreditation from the above organization.
