EDTC 1150   Portfolio Development (1)
This is a WECM Course Number.
Prerequisite: None.
In-depth coverage of portfolio development for educational personnel based on past and present field experiences in educational settings. Focus is on reflection of best practices and current trends. Students will be required to submit to and pass a criminal background search as prescribed by the program and college. This course may be repeated for credit. (1 Lec.)

EDTC 1164   Practicum (or Field Experience)-Teacher Assistant/Aide (1)
This is a WECM Course Number.
Prerequisite: The completion of two EDTC courses and Instructor's approval.
Practical general training and experiences in the workplace. The college with the employer develops and documents an individualized plan for the student. The plan relates the workplace training and experiences to the student''s general and technical course of study. The guided external experiences may be paid or unpaid. Students will be required to submit to and pass a criminal background search as prescribed by the program and college. (10 Ext.)

A study of the role and responsibility of the instructional teacher assistant with emphasis on development of professionalism and effective communication strategies with adults. Topics include the various code of ethics governing the educational field, the issue of confidentiality, learners'' rights and responsibilities, and challenges facing schools. Students will be required to submit to and pass a criminal background search as prescribed by the program and college. (3 Lec.)

EDTC 1307   Introduction to Teaching Reading (3)

Prerequisite: None.
Fundamental concepts and principles of reading instruction. Topics include readiness, beginning reading instruction, how literacy emerges, classroom learning environments, word-attach skills, study skills, comprehension, other aspects of the reading program, and examination of varied materials and techniques for teaching reading. Students will be required to submit to and pass a criminal background search as prescribed by the program and college. (3 Lec.)

A capstone course in the core techniques of bilingual education. Topics include teaching techniques, awareness of cultural diversity, historical and philosophical concepts of bilingual/bicultural education, and material development. EDTC 1325   Principles and Practices of Multicultural Education (3)

Examination of cultural variations found in our society and reflected in our pluralistic classrooms. Topics include culturally influenced behavior, major cultures, cultural diversity, and the process of intercultural communication and teaching, including differences in lifestyles, communication styles, learning styles, and various sources of stress for diverse cultural groups. Students will be required to submit to and pass a criminal background search as prescribed by the program and college. (3 Lec.)
