PORT 1311   Beginning Portuguese I (3)
This is a Texas Common Course Number.
Prerequisite: None.
This is the first semester of academic transfer Portuguese. It is an introductory course intended for students with little or no knowledge of the language. Its aim is to present essential vocabulary and grammar, and to develop the pronunciation, listening, reading, and writing skills necessary for basic communication and comprehension. Customs and cultural insights are also presented. This course is cross-listed as PORT 1411 but is used only in Study Abroad programs. Students may register for either PORT 1311 or PORT 1411 but may receive credit for only one of the two. (3 Lec., 1 Lab.)

PORT 1312   Beginning Portuguese II (3)
This is a Texas Common Course Number.
Prerequisite: PORT 1311 or the equivalent or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor.
This is the second semester of academic transfer Portuguese. It continues the oral practice, reading, writing, grammar and cultural studies begun in PORT 1311. Students are expected to acquire a substantial amount of vocabulary and begin to deal with idiomatic language and more advanced syntax. This course is cross-listed as PORT 1412 but is used only in Study Abroad programs. Students may register for either PORT 1312 or PORT 1412 but may receive credit for only one of the two. This is the third semester of academic transfer Portuguese. This course is designed to further develop students' overall language proficiency and cultural knowledge through more advanced reading, listening, speaking and writing exercises. Grammatical concepts are reviewed and expanded. (3 Lec.)

This is the fourth semester of academic transfer Portuguese. This course is a continuation of PORT 2311. The stress is on reading, composition, grammatical complexities, and intense oral practice, with continued studies of the culture. (3 Lec.)
