This program prepares the student to become a professional radiologic technologist with a specialty in radiography. The radiographer uses radiation to produce internal images of the patient which are used by the physician to make a diagnosis. For the vast majority of diagnostic procedures, the radiographer has total responsibility for the care and well-being of the patient and must be prepared to produce quality images with care and empathy.

The graduate radiographer is eligible to sit for the examination given by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and eligible to be a Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist licensed by the Texas Department of Health. Radiographers work in hospitals, physician's offices, and primary care facilities.

Completion of the program and successful completion of the ARRT examination provides the graduate with credentials to continue their education in other radiologic specialty disciplines. DCCCD offers this degree at El Centro and Brookhaven; although the admission requirements vary from El Centro to Brookhaven, the program of courses are the same with the exception of five courses. Those attending El Centro will enroll in courses specified as HPRS (Health Professions and Related Sciences see El Centro degree plan). NOTE: HPRS 1204, 1271, 1202, 2300 and 2231 are all health occupations core curriculum courses. Students applying for admission to El Centro Radiography program must comply with the following criteria outlined in this paragraph. Admission requirements include an information session, satisfactory scores on pre-entrance assessment testing, completion of four prerequisite courses with a minimum of 2.5 grade point average and completion of all requirements for admission as a full-time student to the College. Applicants are rank-ordered for admission based on grade point average earned for the prerequisite courses. Applicants should contact the Assessment Center at El Centro College to sign up for the assessment tests and Health Occupations Admissions to obtain an information packet.
