PHIL 1301 Introduction to Philosophy (3)
This is a Texas Common Course Number. Prerequisite: Developmental Reading 0093 or English as a Second Language (ESOL) 0044 or have met the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) standard in Reading. An introduction to the ideas about such things as the good life, reality, God, the acquisition and characteristics of knowledge, and the nature of humans. Students will evaluate both ancient and modern theories about these issues in terms of their logic, historical significance, and meaning in everyday life, as they practice the methods for doing philosophy. (3 Lec.)

PHIL 2303 Logic (3)
This is a Texas Common Course Number. Prerequisite: None. The critical and correct construction and analysis of arguments using induction, deduction and scientific reasoning. Students will practice analyzing fallacies, definitions, analogies, and uses of language. They will learn to use some of the elementary tools of formal logic, such as Venn diagrams, truth tables, and formal proofs using the rules of inference. (3 Lec.)

PHIL 2306 Ethics (3)

Consideration of what constitutes a good and a moral life. Using classical and contemporary theories, students will weigh such ingredients as pleasure, duty, power, and love as they apply to current issues of daily living. The history of philosophy from pre-Socratic times to the Renaissance is examined. Connections are made between the pre-Socratics, Plato, and Aristotle; Stoicism, Epicureanism, and Scholasticism are considered. (3 Lec.)

PHIL 2317 History of Modern Philosophy (3)
This is a Texas Common Course Number. Prerequisite: Developmental Reading 0093 or English as a Second Language (ESOL) 0044 or have met the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) standard in Reading. The history of philosophy from the Renaissance through the 19th century is examined. Emphasis is on continental rationalism, British empiricism, Kantian metaphysics and epistemology, and the Hegelian system as it relates to 20th century philosophies. The historical relationships among these schools of thought are explored. (3 Lec.)

PHIL 2389 Academic Cooperative in Philosophy (3)
