RNSG 1105   Nursing Skills I (1)
This is a WECM Course Number.
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of "C" in ENGL 1301, CHEM 1405 or CHEM 1411, SCIT 1407 or BIOL 2401 and PSYC 2301. Admission to the Professional Nursing Program or administrative approval.
Corequisite: RNSG 1462, RNSG 1413.
Study of the concepts and principles essential for demonstrating competence in the performance of nursing procedures. Topics include knowledge, judgment skills, and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. (3 Lab.)

RNSG 1108   Dosage Calculations for Nursing (1)
This is a WECM Course Number.
Prerequisite: None.
Dosage calculations include reading, interpreting and solving calculation problems encountered in the preparation of medications; and conversion of measurements within the apothecary, avoirdupois, and metric system. (1 Lec.)

RNSG 1144   Nursing Skills II (1)
This is a WECM Course Number.
Prerequisite: RNSG 1105.
Corequisite: RNSG 1441, RNSG 2462.
Describe concepts and principles that are basic to the safe performance of nursing skills; and demonstrate competence in the performance of nursing procedures. (3 Lab.)

RNSG 1160   Clinical - Nursing - Registered Nurse Training (1)
This is a WECM Course Number.
Prerequisite: RNSG 1413, RNSG 1105, RNSG 1360, ENGL 1301, and CHEM 1405. Additional prerequisites include SCIT 1408 OR BIOL 2402, and PSYC 2314.
Corequisite: RNSG 2213.
A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. Focus is on health promotion, expanded assessment, multi-disciplinary teamwork, communication, and the role of the nurse within a legal/ethical framework in a mental health setting. Content includes applicable competencies in basic workplace skills. (3 Ext.)

RNSG 1211   Nursing Pathophysiology (2)
This is a WECM Course Number.
Prerequisite: BIOL 2401 or SCIT 1407. Co-requisite: SCIT 1408 or BIOL 2402.
Basic principles of pathophysiology emphasizing nursing applications. Topics include principles of homeostasis related to body systems. (2 Lec.)

RNSG 1301   Pharmacology (3)
This is a WECM Course Number.
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of "C" in SCIT 1407 or Biology 2401 and concurrent enrollment in SCIT 1408 or Biology 2402. Registered Nurses or Licensed Vocational Nurses may enroll for refresher purposes.
Introduction to the science of pharmacology with emphasis on the actions, interactions, adverse effects, and nursing implications of each drug classification. Topics include the roles and responsibilities of the nurse in safe administration of medications within a legal/ethical framework. (3 Lec.)

RNSG 1360   Clinical - Nursing - Registered Nurse Training (3)

Prerequisite: Co-requisite: RNSG 1413, RNSG 1105.
A health-related work-based learning experience in a medical-surgical setting that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. (12 Ext.)

RNSG 1413   Foundations for Nursing Practice (4)
This is a WECM Course Number.
Prerequisite: ENGL 1301, CHEM 1405 or CHEM 1411, BIOL 2401 OR SCIT 1407, and PSYC 2301 with a minimum grade of "C." Admission to the Professional Nursing Program or administrative approval.
Corequisite: RNSG 1462, RNSG 1105.
Introduction to the role of the professional nurse as provider of care, coordinator of care, and member of the profession. Topics include but are not limited to the fundamental concepts of nursing practice, history of professional nursing, a systematic framework for decision-making, mechanisms of disease, the needs and problems that nurses help patients manage, and basic psychomotor skills. Emphasis on knowledge, judgment, skills and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. (4 Lec.)

RNSG 1441   Common Concepts of Adult Health (4)

Prerequisite: RNSG 1413, RNSG 1462, RNSG 1105.
Corequisite: RNSG 2462, RNSG 1144.
Study of the general principles of caring for selected adult clients and families in structured settings with common medical-surgical health care needs related to each body system. Emphasis on knowledge judgment, skills, and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. (4 Lec.)

RNSG 1443   Complex Concepts of Adult Health (4)

Prerequisite: RNSG 1441, RNSG 2462, RNSG 1144.
Corequisite: RNSG 2560.
Integration of previous knowledge and skills related to common adult health needs into the continued development of the professional nurse as a provider of care, coordinator of care, and member of a profession in the care of adult clients/families in structured health-care settings with complex medical-surgical health-care needs associated with each body system. Emphasis on knowledge, judgments, skills, and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. (4 Lec.)

RNSG 2160   Clinical - Nursing - Registered Nurse Training (1)

RNSG 2208   Maternal/Newborn Nursing and Women's Health (2)

Study of concepts related to the provision of nursing care for normal childbearing families and those at risk, as well as women's health issues; competency in knowledge, judgment, skill, and professional values within a legal/ethical framework, including a focus on normal and high-risk needs for the childbearing family during the preconception, prenatal, intrapartum, neonatal, and postpartum periods; and consideration of selected issues in women's health. RNSG 2213   Mental Health Nursing (2)

Principles and concepts of mental health, psychopathology, and treatment modalities relating to the nursing care of clients and their families. Emphasis is on assessment, communication techniques, promotion of mental health, caring, ethical/legal aspects, collaborative roles of nurse in a variety of settings. Content includes applicable competencies in basic workplace skills. Licensing/Certification Agency: Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas (BNE). (2 Lec.)

A health-related work-based learning experience in a medical-surgical setting that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. (12 Ext.)

RNSG 2461   Clinical-Nursing - Registered Nurse Training (4)

Prerequisite: RNSG 2201, RNSG 2160, RNSG 2208, RNSG 2161, BIOL 2420, SPAN 1300. Co-requisite course: RNSG 1443.
A health-related, work-based experience in a medical-surgical setting that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. Utilizes systematic problem-solving process and critical-thinking skills to provide nursing care to individuals with complex health care needs in diverse health care settings. Focus is on health promotion, work organization, time management, communication techniques, ethical/legal aspects, and critical-thinking skills. Emphasis is on performance of assessment, pharmacotherapeutic interventions, and the collaborative role of the nurse in the delivery of nursing care. Content includes applicable competencies in course-related and basic workplace skills. (16 Ext.)
