Instruction in the identification and classification of the plants used in home and commercial interior landscapes. Topics include design characteristics for interiorscapes and environmental requirements of the plants. (1 Lec., 3 Lab.)

Study of the identification, characteristics, cultural requirements, and landscape uses of native and adapted plants. (6 Lab.)

HALT 1296   Special Topics in Nursery Operations and Management (2)
This is a WECM Course Number.
Field course in horticulture to study Texas native plants in their natural environment. The class will study the different regional ecosystems such as the Trans-Pecos, High Plains, East and West Cross Timbers, Central Texas (Hill Country), Piney Woods of East Texas, the Valley, the Gulf Coast and the Post Oak Belt. Students will learn about the varied soil types, rainfall, temperature ranges, and elevation of the regions. This course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. (6 Lab.)

An in-depth study of herbaceous plant material. Topics include practices and procedures used in the identification, growth, propagation, maintenance, and utilization of herbaceous plants in the horticulture industry. (2 Lec., 3 Lab.)

A study of the physical properties of soil including structure and texture. Topics include the origin and development of soils, the composition of a soil horizon, and the interrelationship between soil fertility and plants. (2 Lec., 3 Lab.)

Exploration of landscape construction materials and the methods used for installation. Topics include site preparation, use of common construction materials, landscape lighting, water features, and general construction details. (2 Lec., 3 Lab.)

Problem solving and use of formulas and calculations commonly used in the horticulture industry. Emphasis on mathematical, geometrical, financial and chemical calculations. (3 Lec.)

In-depth coverage of various species of warm and cool season grasses including their uses, application, adaptability, environmental tolerances, anatomy, and physiological responses. (2 Lec., 3 Lab.)

An in-depth study of the woody plant materials used in the horticulture industry. Topics include identification, characteristics, adaptation, cultural requirements, pest and disease problems, and use in the landscape. (2 Lec., 4 Lab.)

Prerequisite: HALT 1333.
Application of the science of soil-water plant relations and climatic conditions to develop effective scheduling and management of irrigation water systems for residential, commercial, industrial, part, and golf courses. Water conservation issues, water policies, codes, and other related matters will be discussed. (2 Lec., 3 Lab.)

Instruction in the structure of the landscape business including cost estimation; organization; equipment needs; interpretation of financial reports; and material, labor and equipment management. Emphasis on the types of landscape operations, marketing, legal forms, construction law and safety. (2 Lec., 3 Lab.)

A study of the principles and elements of landscape design. Topics include client interview, site analysis, plan view, scale, plant selection, basic drawing and drafting skills and plan preparation. (2 Lec., 6 Lab.)

Fundamentals of woody plant physiology and growth including techniques and procedures utilized in making sound tree care decisions related to growth and pest and disease control. Topics include design principles of planning and maintenance for city streets, parks, and commercial and residential properties. (2 Lec., 3 Lab.)

Advanced applications of landscape irrigation. Topics include commercial applications of irrigation including athletic fields, golf courses, and large commercial projects. Topics also include equipment, design, performance, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair. (2 Lec., 3 Lab.)

A study of the sexual and asexual propagation of plants used in horticulture. Topics include propagation by seeds, cuttings, grafting, budding, layering, division, separation, and tissue culture; and environmental factors of propagation. (2 Lec., 3 Lab)

An overview of the procedures for establishing and operating a commercial nursery. Topics include site selection, structures, equipment, stock selection, production practices, harvesting, marketing and management practices. (2 Lec., 3 Lab.)

Examination of federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing the control of horticultural pests. Topics include procedures; methods; safety requirements; integrated pest management (IPM); and chemical, natural, and biological controls. (2 Lec., 3 Lab.)

Career-related activities encountered in the student's area of specialization offered through an individualized agreement among the college, employer and student.
