An overview of fashion trends and concepts, history, economic influences, trade vocabulary, retailing, marketing, textiles, merchandise display, and visual concepts. Topics include developing a marketing plan for apparel and accessory products and examination of job opportunities available in apparel and accessories marketing. (2 Lec.)

A general study of textiles with emphasis on factors that affect the hand, appearance, and performance in clothing use. Examination of the properties of natural and man-made fibers, how yarn is formed, methods of production, and the properties of a wide variety of fabrics. Instruction in draping various designs on a dress form and translating the designs to a muslin pattern. (2 Lec., 4 Lab.)

Prerequisite: FSHN 1417 with a "C" or better and FSHD 1324.
A continuation of Pattern Drafting I. Emphasis on drafting and draping basic patterns and garment construction. (2 Lec., 4 Lab.)

FSHN 1319   Pattern Drafting III (3)
This is a WECM Course Number.
Prerequisite: FSHN 1318, FSHN 1325 and FSHD 1324.
Develops techniques for drafting and draping patterns for apparel. Includes creation and construction of original designs. (2 Lec., 4 Lab.)

FSHN 1325   Basic Women's Tailoring (3)
This is a WECM Course Number.
Prerequisite: FSHD 1324.
An introduction to tailoring women's apparel including instruction in pattern alterations; assembling women's jackets skirts, and pants; and fitting and alteration procedures. Fundamentals of sewing machine operations, fabric preparation and cutting, machine and hand sewing techniques, and pressing proficiencies. (2 Lec., 4 Lab.)

FSHN 1382   Cooperative Education - Fashion Merchandising (3)
This is a WECM Course Number.
Prerequisite: Completion of two courses in Fashion Marketing or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor.
Career-related activities encountered in the student's area of specialization offered through an individualized agreement among the college, employer, and student. Under the supervision of the college and the employer, the student combines classroom learning with work experience. Includes a lecture component. (1 Lec., 15 Ext.)

Prerequisite: FSHD 1318 or consent of instructor.

FSHN 1417   Pattern Drafting I (4)

Prerequisite: Student must make a grade of "C" or better.
Principles of drafting and draping basic collars, skirts, bodices, and sleeves. Includes cutting out garments. (2 Lec., 6 Lab.)

FSHN 1418   Pattern Drafting II (4)
This is a WECM Course Number.
Prerequisite: FSHN 1417 with a grade of "C" or better, FSHD 1324.
The student will draft and construct various collars, skirts, necklines, and sleeves and demonstrate pattern-making skills. This course is cross-listed as FSHN 1318. The student may register for either FSHN 1318 of FSHN 1418, but may receive credit for only one of the two. (2 Lec, 8 Lab.)

FSHN 1449   Intermediate Pattern Drafting (4)
This is a WECM Course Number.
Prerequisite: FSHN 1417 with a grade of "C" or better, FSHN 1418, FSHD 1324.
Intermediate techniques for drafting and draping patterns. Emphasis on computer drafting of patterns. (2 Lec., 8 Lab.)

Preparation and enhancement of portfolio to meet professional standards. Includes development of presentations skills and improvement of job-seeking techniques for fashion-industry employment. (1 Lec.)

FSHN 2301   Fashion Promotion (3)

A survey of fashion direction, publicity, and fashion event coordination. Emphasis on fashion show production from idea to runway including theme development, stage/set design, choreography, music coordination, lighting, line-up, model fittings, rehearsal and press kit development. (3 Lec.)

Fundamentals of fashion buying with instruction in planning, pricing, and purchasing retail fashion inventories. Identification of wholesale merchandise resources. (3 Lec.)

General principles and practices of fashion advertising and consumer directed communication. A study of persuasive media approaches for public relations induced publicity and advertising produced sales promotions. (3 Lec.)

Skill development in the creation of showroom or retail store window/interior displays that sell merchandise. Study of the basic techniques of store planning, mannequin dressing, alternate form design, and display space conceptualization and implementation. (2 Lec., 2 Lab.)
