Credit for Non-Traditional Learning

The College is committed to serve students and the community in the most effective manner possible while maintaining high standards of education.  Students learn in a variety of ways and through a multitude of experiences.  Therefore, the College will evaluate these learning experiences and grant equivalent college credit applicable to an Associate of Applied Science degree.  Credit may be granted for occupational courses only in programs approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.  The following guidelines pertain to such evaluations:

  1. The student must be currently enrolled in credit classes at Richland College to receive equivalent credit for non-traditional learning.
  2. The student must have an Official Degree Plan on file with the Degree Audit/Graduation Office for the Associate of Applied Science degree the student is pursuing.
  3. Credit for specific courses offered by the College may be granted for non-traditional learning experiences after proper assessment of those experiences.  Credit will be awarded on a course-by-course basis only.
  4. Prior to awarding credit for non-traditional course work, a student is required to complete at least 12 semester credit hours with the District.  Six of those credits must be in the student’s major occupational area with earned grades of a “C” or better.
  5. The number of equivalent credits awarded may not exceed 25% of the total number of credits required for the Associate of Applied Science degree.
  6. No graduation, residency, degree or program requirements will be waived as a result of credits earned as provided by this policy.
