Clinical - Emergency Medical Technology/Technician
This is a WECM Course Number. Prerequisite: Current BCLS (CPR) certification. Corequisite/Concurrent: Enrollment in, or prior completion within 6 months of EMSP 1501. Students will be required to submit to and pass a criminal background search and a drug screen as prescribed by the program and college. Failure to comply will result in the student being dropped from all EMSP courses.
Course Description: A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. (5 Ext.)

Trauma Management
This is a WECM Course Number. Prerequisite: (1) Current BCLS (CPR) certification at the Health Care Provider level by the American Heart Association or equivalent, (2) Current certification by the Texas Department of State Health Services as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic or higher, (3) Successful completion of EMSP 1356. Patient Assessment and Airway Management

Special Topics in Emergency Medical Technology/Technician
This is a WECM Course Number. Prerequisite: Admission into the Emergency Medical Services Program OR current Texas EMS Certification/license at a minimum of EMT-Basic level, OR current enrollment in EMSP 1501, and current BCLS (CPR) certification.
Course Description: Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledge, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. In particular, this course will cover Hazardous Material (HazMat) awareness and management, Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) events, the national Incident command System (ICS), and Multi Casualty Incident (MCI) management. This course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. (2 Lec., 2 Lab.)

Introduction to Advanced Practice
This is a WECM Course Number. Prerequisite: (1) Verification of successful completion of testing with the National Registry of EMT's at either Emergency Medical Technician Basic or Intermediate levels; or current certification by the Texas Department of State Health Services as an EMT-Basic or Intermediate; (2) Current BCLS (CPR) certification at the Health Care Provider level by the American Heart Association or equivalent; (3) Successful completion of a departmental assessment of EMT-Basic knowledge at the DOT National Standard Curriculum level; (4) Demonstrated competency in math, reading, and writing. Corequisite/Concurrent: Students will be required to submit to and pass a criminal background search and a drug screen as prescribed by the program and college. Failure to comply will result in the student being dropped from all EMSP courses.
Course Description: An exploration of the foundations necessary for mastery of the advanced topics of clinical practice out of the hospital. This course is cross-listed as EMSP 1338. The student may register for either EMSP 1438 or EMSP 1338, but may receive credit for only one of the two. (3 Lec., 3 Lab.)

Emergency Medical Technician-Basic
This is a WECM Course Number. Prerequisite: (1) Current BCLS (CPR) certification at the Health Care Provider level by the American Heart Association or equivalent, (2) Demonstrated competency in MATH 0090, DREA 0091, and DWRI 0091. Corequisite/Concurrent: Students will be required to submit to and pass a criminal background search and a drug screen as prescribed by the program and college. Course Description: Introduction to the level of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic. Includes all the skills necessary to provide emergency medical care at a basic life support level with ambulance services or other specialized services. (2 Lec., 9 Lab.)

Course Description: Instruction in a laboratory environment concentrating on practical medical skills and critical thinking abilities. Topics include a variety of skills appropriate to the student's training level. Required verifications of specific skills may be included. (4 Lab.)

Cardiology

Course Description: A detailed study of the knowledge and skills necessary to reach competence in the assessment and management of patients with cardiac emergencies. In addition to the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of a cardiac crisis, it includes dysrhythmia recognition and 12 Lead ECG interpretation for field diagnosis, as well as pharmacological and electrical interventions for treatment.
