ASSOCIATE IN ARTS DEGREE WITH AN EMPHASIS IN AFRICAN AMERICAN/BLACK STUDIES
Available at Eastfield, Mountain View, and Richland Colleges

This is an "Emphasis degree". Students should read and understand the paragraphs below.

This degree plan is designed to meet the needs of students who plan to transfer to a four-year college/university. Students planning to continue their African American/Black Studies as a transfer student should check specific requirements at the transfer institution. This plan may not satisfy all the requirements of a specific transfer four-year college/university.

In order to be eligible to receive this AA degree, a student must:

  1. Complete a minimum of 60 credit hours including all the required courses listed;
  2. Earn A grade of "C" or better in English 1301, Speech 1311 and the selected college-level mathematics course;
  3. Receive a GPA (2) of at least 2.00 ("C");
  4. Meet all Texas Success Initiative (TSI) standards and course prerequisites; and
  5. Complete at least 25% of the credit hours required for graduation through instruction by the college awarding the degree.

*NOTE: When the courses are available, it is strongly recommended that students take the following required Core Curriculum courses (see asterisks) that have the AABS designation. This will enhance student knowledge in the area of African American/Black Studies. Please refer to the current schedule of classes for listings.

Students should work closely with an academic advisor/counselor.
