EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES -- PARAMEDICINE

(Associate in Applied Sciences Degree)

  • Students pursuing this award program are required to meet Texas Success Initiative (TSI) standards and course prerequisites.
  • Students must earn at least 25% of the credit hours required for graduation through instruction by the college awarding the degree.

This degree plan combines classroom teaching with supervised clinical and field experience for those seeking certification or license as a Paramedic with the Texas Department of Health Services.

Upon successful completion of all course work for the degree, the student is eligible to take the exam for registration as a Paramedic through the National Registry of EMT. Upon successful completion of that examination, the student is eligible to apply for certification or license as a Paramedic in the State of Texas.

Texas certified EMTs enrolled in the Brookhaven College Paramedic Program are eligible for credit for EMSP 1501 and EMSP 1160 via credit-by-exam.

Prerequisite: Completion of a Texas Department of Health Services and/or National Registry of EMT approved EMT course of studies is required to enroll in any paramedic-level EMSP class. A current Texas Department of Health Services EMT or higher certification is required to enroll in paramedic-level clinical/internships. Documentation of EMS certification must be submitted prior to the end of EMSP 1438. A current valid certificate of completion of an Emergency Care and Safety Institute, American Red Cross, or American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Support (CPR) for Professional Rescuers/Healthcare Providers (or equivalent at the discretion of the program) is required to enroll in any EMSP class and clinical/internships.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of SCIT 1407 or BIOL 2401 is required to enroll in EMSP 1438.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of SCIT 1408 or BIOL 2402 is required to enroll in EMSP 2434.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of EMSP 2260, EMSP 2261, and POFT 1301 is required to enroll in EMSP 2463.

Corequisite: Successful completion or concurrent enrollment in EMSP 2143 is required to enroll in EMSP 2463.

Corequisite: Successful completion or concurrent enrollment in POFT 1301 is required to enroll in EMSP 2444 or EMSP 2544.

Corequisite: Successful completion or concurrent enrollment in SCIT 1408 or BIOL 2402 is required to enroll in EMSP 1356.

A language elective particularly Spanish and American Sign Language are recommended for the professional EMS provider.
