Course Description: This clinical course provides a learning experience in a psychiatric setting that enables the student to apply psychiatric nursing theory, skills, and concepts related to the nursing care of clients with alterations in mental health. The clinical focus is on psychiatric assessment, the interview, communication techniques, and nursing care planning. The study of psychiatric medications and their side effects is another clinical focus, as is critical thinking and safety in the psychiatric setting. Pharmacology
This is a WECM Course Number. Prerequisite: Minimum grade of "C" in SCIT 1407 or BIOL 2401 and concurrent enrollment or completion of SCIT 1408 or BIOL 2402. It is strongly recommended that this course be taken after the completion of RNSG 1311. At MVC, this course must be successfully completed prior to entering Semester III of the nursing program. Registered nurses or Licensed Vocational Nurses may enroll for refresher purposes.
Course Description: Introduction to the science of pharmacology with emphasis on the actions, interactions, adverse effects, and nursing implications of each drug classification. Emphasis on clinical decision making for clients in medical-surgical settings experiencing health problems involving fluid and electrolytes; perioperative care; pain; respiratory disorders; peripheral vascular disorders; immunologic disorders; and infectious disorders. At MVC, this course includes a supervised hospital clinical practicum in which the student cares for three-four acutely ill, non-critical adult patients, selected experiences in the skills laboratory, and medical math content.
